Remembering the Wisdom of our Ancestors
My boys and I built a snow cave and then an Igloo and stayed in it in Northern Maine last week. The temps were -5 to -15 degrees F.
The temp in the igloo was zero. We did not bring a kudlik (tray of whale blubber with moss wicks) to heat it but it would have been a boon to have a source of heat. It was very strong after 24 hours, all the blocks welding to each other, with lots of light coming through during the day.I expect it will be there until spring. A small heat source would have made it quite livable. It took two people 4-5 hours to construct and was not difficult. This is a very simple, safe, reliable shelter if there is enough snow. I find it much more habitable than the snow cave although the latter will save your life in a pinch.
