We had a wonderful day at Mal Stephen's new Wells Classroom an acorn of the
Maine Primitive Skills School.
The weather was fantastic, the friends amazing, and the day was filled with bustling activity. I got to work on making a gourd bowl which is something I've been dreaming of doing for awhile. I've seen so many amazing gourds over the years, I often wished to make one myself. Today, Mike Douglas made that happen. Mike, brought gourds that he grew in his own garden last year. He shared his knowledge and his heirloom seeds for all of us to recreate this experience on our own.
I can't say that my first gourd came out all that great but I did learn a lot and I think I've got a bit of the gourd bug. There is so much potential in working with gourds that I can't wait to grow our own next year. What I really like about working with the gourds is it's quick. You can actually make a gourd bowl in a day unlike some other primitive skills that we do. For me, that is a major bonus. But the real draw I have to gourds is the art factor. Check out some of these amazing gourds that I found online tonight and you may get the gourd bug too.
Whirlwind Studios - Are these not the most amazing grandmothers. I have a feeling grandmother April will be getting one of these one day.

Scoutie Girl - These are too amazingly beautiful for words. To see these creatures from a gourd is so incredible.

GourdFairies Etsy Shop - a drum like this would make a great addition to our gatherings.
