Tom, sorry about that, Mal canceled his classes for the year and I am out of black ash. I will be harvesting some soon, if you'd like to come up for a private class let me know. We'd love to have you up here.

I see you answered the question I just asked about where you get your deer legs in post. I'd be interested in some tanned hides and deer legs if you want to trade for something. I know Mark plans on doing some hide tanning with you but I am really feeling the need to be creative sooner versus later. We have one beautiful smoked hide that Mike Rockwell gave us. Mark said I can have that so I may make a pair of high topped moccasins. Do you do other hides like moose or wood chuck that I could snag a couple of pieces for my soles? Do you do intricate beading? I'd love to learn that. We'll have to get together soon and do a basket hide day. Are you coming to Mal's for the skills share?

Tom, I enjoyed your pics on how you get sinew. Do you have any photos of the needles? I'd like to see what they look like. Where do you get your deer legs...local butchers?

Hey Tom, glad you made it. Hope all is well in Ma. Sorry you couldn't make it up to work on baskets...we'll have to set up another day to do that. I'm interested in doing some hides. My goal is to make some Mukalaks for next winter. Ever made those?

Salted Hides etc

I hooked up with a real nice deer cutter in North Hampton, MA and got about 30 deer hides this year. Spent Sunday salting and trimming the last batch of the year from shotgun season. I have a pile of deer legs if you want some for sinew or bone awls...I don't need all the legs.

I also managed to get a good deal of deer tallow from the sub-cutaneous fat, but it is worth noting that the deer harvested in western mass this year were not very fatty at all...I hope it is a warm winter

I'm at Johnny's seeds for a while. Heirloom tomatoes are big. I can get seeds for older packets of seeds with less then the high germination rate that is the standard, and plan on starting an heirloom tomato garden. Anyone else interested?

It does. Remember that the tannic acid actually curdles the protiens i the skin, including internally. This creates the astringency, and also produces a biological "band aid" of a layer of your own tanned hide. I used tannic acid wash from Oak galls…

Wet wood ash, used as a paste and rinsed qickly to avoid chemical burns (prolonged direct contact over a minute) is a great way to remove pitch and other hard to get off yer skin adherents.
