Hey Josh, Definately a Buckthorn! Thanks for your help, I've been trying to figure this one out for quite a while. Dave

Dave, Take a look at members of the Buckthorn family. I believe both the Peterson's Eastern Trees book and Peterson's Tree/Shrub book will have the species you are looking for. The fruit are not edible, but do have some medicinal applications. L...

I am using the Peterson's guides, plus trying different searches on Google. It is a shrub/small tree. Haven't tried tasting the fruit, but they do smell a little nasty. Thanks! Dave

Hi Dave, What field guide have you tried? Was the plant growing as a shrub/small tree? Do the fruit taste awful? Be well, Josh

I can't seem to figure out what this is. The fruit have 2-3 yellowish disc shaped seeds. Any ideas?

Dave, Moisture is at least part of your problem. It sounds like you are using fresh leaves, which contain a great deal of water. Olive oil is a good preservative, but only if it doesn't have much water added to it. If you are going to make salve ...

Good to hear from you Trevanna. My salve seemed to come out just fine. No smells, no mold, no funny colors! And it seems to work a lot better than my first attempt, when I ended up deep frying the plantain. I ended up with 7 4oz jelly jars of salv...

Hi Dave! It's awesome that you're making salve-- well done! I think you're okay with the oil. I would bet it was just a bit of trapped air. Olive oil is resistant to bacteria growth and takes a long time to go rancid-- and even if it does go ranci...

Hey Dave! I don't know how to send you a message that's not on your wall for everyone to see... but I may have a favour to ask of you. I'm trying to sort out if/how I can make it to this Winter Foraging workshop, and it occurred to me that if you're driving up from South Portland, you might be able to pick me up in Portland and give me a ride. Is that even possible-- would you be comfortable with it, are you driving up that way, etc? If so, I may try to figure out a way to get to Portland and stay with a friend Friday night or something... And if not, no worries at all! There are other ways and I'm still not sure about any of this. Either way, good luck practicing skills in the next 2 weeks and I hope to meet you soon!

Where to practice skills?

Since I live in the suburbs (South Portland - stuck between the Maine Mall and the Jetport) in an apartment, I am looking for suggestions on where to practice primitive skills. Unfortunately I can't do much with shelter building, hide tanning, and fire making (other than making coals indoors) without making the landlords or the neighbors upset.

I have a few small wooded areas around, that not too many people go to where I can do a few things, but I always worry about being "caught" by someone.… Continue
