The Power of Pine Pitch

At the base of a 400 year old pine, Emma, Andrew, and I were discussing the knowledge that this tree must have. Which lead to a discussion on the benefits of our beloved White Pine.

The Sweet Taste of Spring - Stinging Nettle, Sweet Potato, and Turkey Pot Pie

Today was an amazing day with the family. In York at the base of second hill near Mount Agamanticus, we took a hike in search of Spice Bush, Usnea, Burdock, and Wild Leeks . The Spice Bush, the only one we know of, was just starting to flower. Old Man's Beard was being allusive in the deep dark woods. But that didn't dampen our spirits. As we moved on, we found what we thought might be a large patch of Wild Leeks but were unable to get one out without breaking it. We didn't want to disturb more… Continue

A day for Sharing....skills, food, hugs, and gourds!

We had a wonderful day at Mal Stephen's new Wells Classroom an acorn of the Maine Primitive Skills School.

The weather was fantastic, the friends amazing, and the day was filled with bustling activity. I got to work on making a gourd bowl which is something I've been dreaming of doing for awhile. I've seen so many amazing gourds over the years, I often wished to make one myself. Today, Mike Douglas made that happen. Mike, brought gourds that he grew… Continue

You won't be making this in the Wilderness!

But ohh is it fun to eat!

Today is Drew's birthday and we celebrated by making a pirate cake and matching pirate inspired cupcakes to take to school tomorrow. After 7 hours of baking, kneading fondant, and making little skulls, our fingers were black and blue (from food dye), ou… Continue

Hi Cindi, I havnt been on in a while or I would have responded sooner. You asked what CQB is so here goes. CQB is close quarters battle. That consist of tactical entry into urban threat environments to resolve conflict using firearms and/or less leathal devices such as flash bangs, tear gas or rubber buckshot. It is a skill which has no practical application outside of work. I am much more excited about building bows and other equipment. Last summer I made my own knife for the earth living course and it worked out well. I am currently refining that design to come up with a primitive skills knife that is specific to the task of fire and trap making and other such primitive things. It should be done soon. I dont have any backround in knife making but I wont let that slow me down one bit. Anyway, I am glad to be a member of the site and I hope to learn a lot from all of the folks here.

Candi,

The deer cutters throw away the deer legs and likewise, moose, elk etc. My garage is full of deer legs, but they may be way past prime time by now...you can have a few for nuttin if they are still in ok shape to get sinew and bone for awls and needles. There is a guy in Sanford that ranches Buffalo and Elk and I'm sure he would give you some fresh legs when he harvests them.

I'll bring some deer legs up to Mal's in March

Candi, I wanted to post an event but I couldn't figure out how to get it onto the proper place. Friday, February 28-Sunday Mar 1: Outdoor Educators Winter Weekend at Ashokan Outdoor Ed center just West of Kingston, NY. There will be lots of casual workshops, a trade blanket, evening entertainment, great food and networking and it's cheap! Look at Website: www.ashokancenter.org , I think. This event should be much better attended because it is great. Let's make the primitive skills component grow!

What do you think about a swap feature for stuff of interest to abos? I just made a list of stuff I should part with. Can we post it? How should I do that? I am enjoying the site; it seems to be growing nicely!

Candi, Never made mukluks, but made some felt proofs for pucker toe winter mocs, sincs then uncovered a good deal of info on making winter mocs and pac shoes. Mukluks require some fancy stiching...
